Residents in six Aberdeenshire villages have been told street lights will soon be turned off for most of the night.

The local authority said the move was aimed at lowering costs as well as helping the environment.

It will be introduced initially in Auchenblae, Auchterless, Monymusk, Rora, Sandend and Sauchen.

The trial switch-offs, between midnight and 0600 GMT, will begin later this month.

Peter Argyle, chairman of Aberdeenshire Council's infrastructure services committee, said: "This is an interesting trial which we hope will highlight the benefits of saving energy by switching street lights off at times when there is relatively little need for them to be on.

"A number of issues will be considered as part of the initiative, including public safety, and residents in the trial settlements will have the opportunity to comment as part of a detailed review."

Aberdeenshire Council aims to save £51m over the next two years.
