Aberdeenshire Council to shed teaching assistant posts

Aberdeenshire Council is set to shed more than 180 pupil assistant posts.

About 1,400 staff have been consulted about the proposed change which will see the creation of a single pupil support assistant.

This would replace four existing roles of classroom assistant, child supervisor, lunchtime auxiliary and support for learning auxiliary.

Aberdeenshire Council said it was addressing a significant budget overspend on school support.

The local authority said it was looking to avoid compulsory redundancies, and staff who had not been matched to a new post but wanted to stay at the council would be offered training.

Maria Walker, director of education, learning and leisure, said: "We are aware of the impact this will have on our workforce."
