A police investigation has been launched after a stretch of railway line in Aberdeenshire was damaged.

British Transport Police said the alarm was raised by a train driver on Sunday night on a stretch of track to the west of Stonehaven.

Many rush-hour services were cancelled or delayed on Monday.

Scenes of crime officers were sent to the scene to establish how the damage was caused.

Network Rail described it as a "serious incident."

Buses were being used as an alternative for passengers.
