Man dies after fall from Northern Isles ferry Hjaltland
A man has died after falling overboard from a ferry bound for the Northern Isles.
Aberdeen Coastguard received a call at about 20:20 on Sunday to say a man had fallen from the MV Hjaltland, which operates between Aberdeen and Kirkwall on Orkney.
A spokesman said he was picked up and taken by helicopter to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.
The incident happened about 30 miles north of Fraserburgh.
It is not clear at this stage how the man - who has not been named - ended up in the water. An investigation is under way to establish what happened.
The Hjaltland's fast rescue craft was launched to pick the man up.
He was airlifted to hospital by a helicopter from RAF Lossiemouth.
