Man and woman rescued from fire in Peterhead

A man and a woman have been rescued from a fire in a flat in Peterhead.

Several people also had to be evacuated from the building, on North Street, just after 19:00 on Tuesday.

The blaze started on the first floor, and those rescued were on the second floor. Firefighters from Grampian Fire and Rescue Service wore breathing apparatus as they tackled the flames.

The two people who were rescued did not require hospital treatment, the emergency services said.

'Far more serious'

Grampian Police Det Con George Nixon said: "The fire was quickly extinguished and some residents were evacuated as a precaution.

"Thankfully, no one was injured as a result of the incident but the consequences could potentially have been far more serious.

"The fire is currently being treated as unexplained and a joint investigation between the police and fire service is being carried out."
