Moray child sex abuser Paul O'Neill jailed

A man who admitted sexually abusing a girl in Moray has been jailed for seven years and four months.

Paul O'Neill, 48, of Braeside, Keith, groomed the 10-year-old girl, then subjected her to months of rape and abuse.

O'Neill also shot indecent footage of his victim.

At the High Court in Edinburgh, Lord Uist said O'Neill had set about grooming his victim before carrying out the "disgusting sexual acts".

Defence counsel David Moggach said his client was offering no excuses for his conduct.

'Particularly disturbing'

He said: "Looking back on it he says he became something he detested."

O'Neill was placed on the sex offenders register indefinitely.

Det Insp Norman Stevenson, who led the inquiry, said: "The inquiry into Paul O'Neill was particularly disturbing due to the young age of the victim.

"The crimes were despicable and I can find no reasonable explanation at all for his thought process as he was carrying out his crimes.

"Hopefully through the support and care given by the authorities following these crimes being uncovered, his young victim and her family can now move on with their lives and I hope that today's sentence assists them with doing that."
