Firm fined over Aberdeen manhole fall injury

A company has been fined after a long-serving employee fell down a manhole on a construction site in Aberdeen.

D and E Mackay had been carrying out groundwork for a new medical centre when the industrial accident happened in May 2014 near Great Northern Road.

Labourer Robert Gerrard, 61, suffered a fractured hip and cracked vertebrae in his back.

The firm admitted health and safety failings at Aberdeen Sheriff Court and was fined £17,500.

D and E's defence solicitor Mark Donaldson said the company "deeply regretted" the failings that led to the accident and Mr Gerrard's injuries.

Sheriff Graeme Napier said: "It seems to me that the failure to cover this man hole cover was a serious one."
