Holiday firm Barrhead Travel is to create 50 new jobs to support its expansion plans next year.

The Glasgow-based group, which has seen turnover rise by 20% over the past year, is to open a further five branches across Scotland in the first quarter of 2011.

The announcement will see Barrhead's workforce exceed 500 employees in the next 12 months.

The company currently has 20 stores across Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Barrhead's chief executive, Sharon Munro, said: "We are determined to build on our achievements in 2010, and are investing hundreds of thousands of pounds in new branches, websites, training, technology and IT infrastructure.

"Our aim is to open five new branches, including those in East Kilbride, Ayr, Cumbernauld and Hamilton, over the next three months and expand many of our existing branches during 2011."

She added: "As a result, we will be recruiting more staff across all levels to support the company's growth."

Earlier this week, the firm announced plans to increase turnover in its cruise business by 50%, to £45m, during 2011.
