Total reports production under way at Islay gas field

French company Total has announced that production has started at its Islay gas field in the North Sea.

The firm said it had already reached its target of 15,000 barrels of oil equivalent a day.

Total fully owns and operates the field, which has estimated reserves of nearly 17 million barrels.

The field, which was discovered in mid-2008, lies at a depth of 120m (393ft) and is located 270 miles north-east of Aberdeen.

Total also owns the Elgin platform in the North Sea, where it has been attempting to stem a gas leak which started on 25 March.

In its latest weekly update, Total said its efforts to tackle the leak were going according to plan.

Drilling of a relief well is under way, while experts have been preparing for a well control operation on the platform.
