Work to extend Britain's longest dry ski slope has begun at Hillend near Edinburgh.

The £500,000 revamp includes an extra 210m (690ft) piste and a new nursery slope.

The Midlothian Snowsports Centre was threatened with closure in 2010 after Midlothian Council said it could no longer afford to fund it.

But Sportscotland and the Scottish government stepped in last year with £1m of funding to secure its future.

The fight to save the centre, also known as the Hillend ski slope, was the focus of an internet campaign supported by more than 27,000 people.
