Moray bakery launches global sales push
A family-owned Scottish bakery plans to boost its sales by expanding into new international markets.
Moray-based Maclean's Highland Bakery is investing £365,000 in new equipment, marketing and additional products as part of a global drive.
It expects to add 15 new staff to its current team of 130.
The bakery is taking orders from as far away as Australia, US and China but plans to focus on exports to the Far East.
Maclean's regularly exhibits at international trade shows in Shanghai, Cologne and New York and is planning to visit Japan in November in a bid to further boost sales.
The Forres-based bakery, which has an annual turnover of more than £3m, is being backed by Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) which is contributing £95,000 towards the expansion drive.
Maclean's said the funding would allow it to keep up with demand for existing produce and help it to develop a new range of premium goods, nationally and internationally.
The bakery, which makes a wide range of products including oatcakes, shortbread and sweet biscuits, recently expanded and diversified into new market areas including the gift and premium food markets.
Managing director Lewis Maclean said: "The new machinery, brand development and trade fair attendance are all part of our growth plan which will allow the company to expand as new opportunities arise.
"A key element of this is increasing our export sales and developing new premium products.
"This expansion in activity will put us in a great position to explore further new markets as well as introduce some new additions to our range."
The Maclean family business was established in 1978 and now runs five retail outlets - three in Forres, one in Nairn and one in Grantown.
