New SNP role for Salmond advisor ahead of referendum

One of Alex Salmond's advisers is leaving the Scottish government to take up a senior role with the SNP ahead of the planned independence referendum.

Kevin Pringle has been Head of Communications since Mr Salmond became first minister in 2007.

He is widely regarded as one of the most effective spin doctors in Scottish politics having helped Mr Salmond to two Holyrood election victories.

Mr Pringle is to become the SNP's head of strategic communications.

Mr Salmond has said his preferred date for a referendum is in the Autumn of 2014.
