An illegal immigrant who took part in a fraudulent credit card scheme has been jailed for 15 months at Jedburgh Sheriff Court.

Chung Wing Wu, 23, admitted attempting to obtain electronic vouchers by fraud using a counterfeit credit card.

He came to the UK from Hong Kong in 2007, but his visa expired earlier this year.

Sheriff Kevin Drummond recommended that Wu be deported at the end of his sentence.

The court heard that Wu used a counterfeit credit card at Lothian and Borders Co-op in Coldstream, Berwickshire, on 10 March.

He also admitted a similar offence at the store's Gifford branch in East Lothian on 15 March.

Wu, a first offender, also obtained £300 worth of electronic credit vouchers using a counterfeit credit card at Hastie and Son garage in Prestonpans on 15 March.

His Chinese co-accused, 26-year-old Jie Zhang, who admitted possession of an electronic card reader and a quantity of counterfeit cards, had sentence deferred until 6 September for reports.
