A man has appeared in court accused of starting a fire which destroyed a Dumfries pub.

James McClone, of Galloway Street, Dumfries, appeared in private before Sheriff Marie McTaggart at Dumfries Sheriff Court.

It is alleged that the 40-year-old wilfully set fire to Mulligans in Nith Place on Saturday. No plea was made and Mr McClone was remanded in custody.

Nobody was hurt in the building fire but all three floors were destroyed.

The road was closed for a period on Saturday as work was carried out to shore up the remains of the building to prevent collapse.
