A meeting to discuss controversial plans to develop sports facilities in the Borders has been postponed due to the winter weather in the region.

The conference was due to take place in Galashiels this weekend.

There has been widespread public concern about proposals which could see some swimming pools closed.

A council spokesman said the conference was "crucial" to establishing the shape of future sports provision and would now be rearranged for a date next year.

Although the sports forum has fallen victim to the weather, one major fixture is still hoping to survive.

Work is ongoing to try to get Melrose Rugby Club's pitch clear for a game on Saturday with Munster.

The club is appealing for volunteers to go along and help out on Thursday and Friday.

Players will also be out helping clear the snow, instead of training, to try to prevent the match being moved.
