Galashiels clerk's bequest options studied

A three-month consultation is to be carried out on how to spend more than £400,000 left by a former town clerk to help the elderly in the Borders.

George Knox bequeathed the money to Scottish Borders Council to be spent in his home town of Galashiels.

The authority wants to speak to local groups and individuals to discuss the options for using the funds.

One suggestion is to create a "healthy living centre" at the Waverley Care Home located in the town.

It could allow older residents to undertake gentle exercise, possibly use a spa or take part in arts and crafts.

Galashiels councillor Fiona Lackenby has urged as many people as possible to make their views known.

Mr Knox died last year at the age of 93 and left much of his estate to the local council.
