Dumfries club's Guid Nychburris licence bid opposed

Police have lodged a formal objection to an application by a Dumfries nightclub to extend its opening hours during the town's summer celebrations.

The operators of Chancers want to stay open until 04:00 to host a guest DJ on Guid Nychburris day this Saturday.

They have applied to the licensing board for the extra hour of operation.

But police said the celebrations have already had a major impact on resources and the extension would increase that pressure.

Chief Constable Pat Shearer said officers had to deal with a number of incidents in and around the Munches Street premises every week.

He said granting an extension would see hundreds of revellers emerge onto town centre streets even later in the morning - heightening the risk of disorder.

The application to extend the opening hours will be considered by the Nithsdale licensing board on Friday.
