Hawick common riding behaviour praised

Police have praised the "positive behaviour" of members of the public during the first of the major summer festivals in the Borders.

Insp Carol Wood said there had been no disorder during the Hawick Common Riding celebrations last week.

Police have been encouraging the public to drink in moderation during this year's festivities.

Insp Wood said efforts in Hawick had ensured a "safe and enjoyable event" for everyone.

"I would also like to thank the organisers and our partner agencies who have worked tirelessly to ensure that the event was a success," she said.

The Hawick events raised the curtain on almost three months of rideouts, parades and other festivities across the Scottish Borders.
