Persimmon Homes' Galashiels housing plans gain approval

Councillors have given the go-ahead to a major housing development on the edge of Galashiels.

Nearly 400 homes are planned for a site at Easter Langlee.

Persimmon Homes received full planning consent for 397 homes - nearly 100 of which would be available as affordable housing.

The scheme had attracted both supporters and objectors, with some concerns about the scale of the project and its road impact.

Planning officials were largely happy that the plans could be accepted, provided a roundabout was created on the C77 road, and that developer contributions were made towards the Borders Railway and local school provision.

Final consent will be awarded under delegated powers, once issues regarding landscaping and layout are resolved.
