Technical problems have delayed the construction work on a third generation (3G) football pitch in Dumfries.

The scheme was supposed to be finished towards the end of November.

Dumfries and Galloway Council confirmed issues had been found with its base "carpet" and it would not now be operational until after Christmas.

A spokesman said the costs of replacing the faulty item would be met by the contractors fitting the pitch at Dumfries High School.

The site is one of three pitches being built in the region thanks to Cashback for Football grants.

One in Annan has already been completed while another is planned for Stranraer.

Work got under way on the Dumfries project in July this year.

The pitch is now scheduled to be handed over to the council by 21 December.

It is then expected to be brought into use early in the new year.
