Dalbeattie abattoir opinions canvassed

The group behind plans for a new abattoir in southern Scotland is to stage the first of two public consultation meetings.

Dumfries and Galloway Food Co-operative (DGFC) wants to build the plant at Craignair Quarry near Dalbeattie.

Campaigners have highlighted a string of concerns including noise and environmental issues.

However, DGFC says it hopes this week's information sessions can allay many of the fears.

The plans were awarded a £1.3m Scottish government grant earlier this year.

Rural Affairs Secretary Richard Lochhead said he hoped the investment could provide an "excellent boost for Scotland's red meat sector".

The information sessions take place at Dalbeattie Town Hall on Thursday and Friday with a further meeting planned in January before a planning application is submitted.
