A gas leak has been ruled out as the cause of the death of a 79-year-old woman which prompted the evacuation of a number of homes in the Borders.

Dorothy Matear was found dead in her home in Fairhurst Drive, Hawick, at about 13:00 on Wednesday.

A strong smell of gas resulted in paramedics alerting the other emergency services and engineers from Scotia Gas Networks who cut off the supply.

Nine neighbouring homes were evacuated but checks on the system found no leak.

The householders were allowed back into their properties at about 19:00 - six hours after the alarm was raised.

An investigation into the pensioner's death is still ongoing.

A spokeswoman for Police Scotland said: "The exact cause of death is still under investigation.

"A report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal."
