A memorial fund set up in honour of a marine from the Borders who was killed in Afghanistan has broken through the £100,000 barrier.

Alec Lucas died in November 2008 following an explosion while on patrol in Helmand province.

An annual football tournament in his honour was held at the weekend and helped reach the funding landmark.

Ahead of the kick-off, the main stand at Whitestone Park in Peebles was renamed the Alexander Lucas Stand.

The marine's father, Adrian, said it was a proud moment.

"The naming of the stand, that was a lovely touch for Alec - fantastic recognition for him," he said.

"We arrived here on 17 August 1999, we came up from Chester.

"Alec went to school the next day - he was a bit miffed because he missed out on his English holidays which should have gone on to September.

"He was playing here on 18 August, so it was quite fitting that his second day in Scotland was on that very pitch."
