'Drugs mule' caught with diazepam near Beattock is jailed

A man caught in possession of 400,000 diazepam tablets has been jailed for 20 months.

Akmal Yaqub, 33, was found with the drugs on the northbound carriageway of the A74(M) near Beattock in April last year.

Dumfries Sheriff Court heard that the tablets had a street value of up to £200,000.

Yaqub, of Walsall in the West Midlands, admitted being concerned in the supply of diazepam at an earlier hearing.

The court was told that the seizure of the tablets resulted in death threats to Yaqub and his family.

It also heard that he was paid £500 to transport the drugs.

His solicitor said that Yaqub had depression, addiction issues and he had been naïve and gullible. This led him into taking on the role of a "mule", he said.
