Police in Stirling have urged Christmas shoppers visiting the city centre to be wary of thieves targeting handbags.

Officers said there had received a number of reports purses being stolen from bags over the weekend.

Central Scotland Police said three shoppers had contacted them after they found that their purses had been stolen while they were shopping in the city centre.

The force has suggested shoppers fit a 'purse bell' to their purses.

A spokesperson said: "At this time of year many shops are busy and crowded therefore everyone should be vigilant to this type of theft, keep your purses in closed bags and watch for anyone suspicious.

"Consider using a 'purse bell' attached to your purse to alert you. Such crimes are not that common however cause upset and distress to victims."
