Dundee's new £33.5m Olympia swimming pool has been officially opened by Sport Minister Shona Robison.

The new facility features a 50m competition pool, wave pool, rapid river and a fitness suite.

Dundee City Council said the pool had already attracted more than 140,000 visitors since June.

Earlier this month, councillors heard that the project had gone more than £2m over budget.

Ms Robison said the new pool would help with the social and urban regeneration of the city.

She added: The new Olympia centre is great for the people of Dundee and it's fantastic to hear that it is already being so well used.

"This new facility was only possible thanks to the good work between Dundee City Council and sportscotland, not only in funding the project, but in ensuring that it meets the needs of the local community, both now and in the future."

Stewart Harris, chief executive of sportscotland, which invested £3m in the project, said the pool was part of a plan to create a network of quality facilities across the country.

He added: "The sports facilities now available in Scotland are the best they have ever been and I have to commend the strategic vision of our partners in local authorities, including Dundee, in helping us to deliver projects like Olympia.

"As a Dundonian myself, I am very proud of what has been achieved here."
