Man sexually and physically assaulted in Newport street

A man in his 50s was sexually and physically assaulted on a Newport street, police say.

He was punched, kicked and molested after a younger man asked him for money in Wyndham Street at about 0500 BST on Sunday.

The attacker is described as white, about 25 years old, 6ft tall and was wearing a white T shirt and black trousers.

Gwent Police said the attack was unprovoked.

Det Ch Insp Ruth Price, who is leading the investigation, said they were appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.

'"This kind of unprovoked physical violence is rare," she said.

"The victim has been brave in coming forward and providing officers with as much detail as he could.

Forensic investigations and house-to-house inquiries have been taking place and additional police patrols are taking place in the area.

Anyone with information should contact police on 01633 838111 or crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
