A 26-year-old man has appeared in court charged with murdering pregnant teenager Nikitta Grender in Newport.

Carl Whant, from Bettws, Newport, also faced a charge of child destruction before Caerphilly magistrates.

The body of Ms Grender, 19, who was two weeks away from giving birth, was found stabbed in her burning flat in the Liswerry area of Newport on 5 February.

He was remanded in custody to appear at Cardiff Crown Court on Tuesday.

The nightclub bouncer was arrested last Wednesday and charged late on Saturday night.

He appeared before magistrates on Monday in a brief, one-minute hearing. He spoke only to confirm his name and age.
