Train damaged by gas cylinder left on track at Shotton

A train was badly damaged after hitting objects left on a railway line in Flintshire, it has emerged.

A gas cylinder was among a number of items deliberately placed on the track at Shotton on 16 April, said British Transport Police.

No-one was injured and the train was not derailed, said officers. However, the incident caused delays and disruption to the rail network.

Insp Dai Davies of North Wales Police said: "The driver of an Arriva Trains Wales service was passing through Shotton low level station when the train hit debris on the line.

"The impact severely damaged the underside of the train, forcing the driver to stop.

"Officers searched the area and discovered that the debris placed on the track included a gas cylinder which appears to have caused most of the damage."
