A woman has been arrested after two children were rescued from a burning house in the early hours.

Neighbours helped a girl aged 10 and a seven-year-old boy from the fire in Ruabon shortly after 05:00 BST.

A 30-year-old local woman was arrested at the scene on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life.

The children were taken to Wrexham Maelor Hospital as a precaution after suffering from slight smoke inhalation.

Neighbouring houses in Wynn Avenue were evacuated but North Wales fire crews stopped the blaze spreading any further.

'Prompt actions'

North Wales Police said they were treating the incident as suspicious and a joint investigation had been launched with the fire service.

Superintendent Sian Beck said: "This could have been far serious had it not been for the prompt actions of members of the public and the emergency services.

"This appears to be an isolated incident and we are not looking for anyone else in connection with the fire.

"However I am appealing to anyone who was in the area at the time who saw any suspicious persons or activity, or indeed knows anything about this fire to contact police immediately."
