A male kayaker has died on the River Conwy at Betws-y-Coed in Snowdonia.

North Wales Police say they were called to the river near the Fairy Glen Hotel in Betws-y-Coed at 15:31 BST on Saturday.

Officers said a body was recovered from the water in an operation involving mountain rescue teams.

No other details have been released so far and police remain at the scene while an investigation into the death gets under way.

The location is outside the main town, on the A470 heading towards Blaenau Ffestiniog.

Enid Youe at the nearby Fairy Glen Hotel said conditions on the river were difficult following heavy rain.

"Ambulance, police, fire engine and mountain rescue have been there for about two hours," she said.

"The river was raging today, and it's been very wet.

"There's a wall the other side of the road from the hotel and the water is up quite high - emergency services have been there for two hours with ropes and ladders because the drop is very steep to the water."
