Two men who stole marine equipment from a slipway were caught when police bid for the items on eBay, a court heard.
North Wales Police officers bid for a £750 dinghy, and two outboard motors valued at £1,000 and £750.
Adam Maiden, 22, of Kidderminster, Worcestershire, who admitted the thefts from Aberdovey, was given a community order by Dolgellau magistrates.
Another man, Tommy Taylor, was given a community order by Kidderminster magistrates, the court heard.
Diane Williams, prosecuting at Dolgellau, said that goods were stolen on three different dates in August.
"The stolen equipment was advertised on eBay and North Wales Police managed to successfully bid for the dingy and one of the outboard motors," she said.
Details of the seller were followed up by police and Maiden admitted the thefts, the court heard.
He was placed on a 12-month community order and has to carry out 100 hours unpaid work with £85 court costs.
