St Andrew's Junior School in Newport shut after fire

A junior school in Newport will be closed until at least Monday following an overnight fire in the staff room.

Five fire crews tackled the blaze at St Andrew's Junior School in Lliswerry caused by an electrical fault in a dishwasher.

The South Wales Fire Service also dealt with a fire at Penrhiwceiber Primary School in Church Street, Penrhiwceiber, Rhondda Cynon Taf, at 2300 BST.

It is thought the fire in a classroom was started deliberately.

Newport Council said the fire at St Andrew's, which started around 2200 BST, badly damaged the staff room and there was smoke damage to other parts of the building.

St Andrew's Infants School was not affected.
