RSPCA witness appeal after Blackwood stallion shot dead

A horse has been found dead with a gunshot to the head, says the RSPCA, which has launched an investigation.

The animal's body was discovered by its owner in a field in Markham near Blackwood in Caerphilly county at 11:00 BST on Monday.

The three-year-old Skewbald stallion was last seen alive at 19:30 BST on Sunday.

The RSPCA said anyone with information about the incident can contact the charity in confidence on 0300 1234 999.

RSPCA officer Sophie Daniels said there was no indication as to the type of weapon used to shoot the horse.

'Slow and painful'

"This poor horse was shot at close range, quite possibly by walking over towards someone at the field gate," she said.

"The owner says that this horse was particularly friendly and he probably went towards the person who shot him.

"His death would have been slow and painful and it's imperative that we find the criminal who committed this vicious attack."
