Cyclist dies after car collision in Newport

A 40-year-old cyclist has died after an incident involving a car in Newport.

The man's bike was in collision with a Volkswagen on the Southern Distributor Road at around 7:50 BST on Wednesday.

The incident caused tailbacks on city approaches after the road was closed for four hours.

A 61-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving. Gwent Police have appealed for witnesses.

The cyclist was taken to the Royal Gwent Hospital where he was declared dead.

The car driver had minor injuries following the collision and was also taken to hospital.

He was later discharged.

Police said both carriageways reopened at around 11:45 BST.
