More Carmarthenshire schools could close

More schools are being added to a list of those earmarked for potential closure in Carmarthenshire.

BBC Wales understands that education officials have been briefing governors about the schools under threat.

It is understood they include Meidrim, Llanpumsaint, Hafodwenog and Cynwyl Elfed primary schools, although others may also be included.

Carmarthenshire council confirmed it was looking at the future of a number of schools, but would not say which.

More than 20 schools, including two comprehensives, have already closed in Carmarthenshire under the council's Modernising Education Programme (MEP).

At the same time over £100m is being invested in new facilities.

The Council would not confirm how many schools have been added to its list and said the work was ongoing.

A report which includes an update to the programme is expected to go before councillors on 9 November.

It is being prepared by Robert Sully, the director of strategic projects.

'Open and honest'

In a statement the council said it had held meetings to "share information and consult with school governors and headteachers" before any information was made public.

"We respect the position of schools regarding the need to have this information prior to it becoming public knowledge," it added.

"The schools system in Carmarthenshire is about providing the best possible service to the children it is there to support.

"In our constantly changing times, we have to regularly review our MEP programme to ensure that it is flexible and meets changing needs.

"It will always be the case that the position of individual schools will change.

"The new proposals were shared openly and honestly with the schools, it is part of our proactive consultation with them and in appreciation of the need to give them this information first.

"The report will be made public for the meeting of the education and children's services scrutiny committee taking place on 9 November."
