A man has appeared in court after an apparent bomb hoax caused Swansea's Quadrant Shopping Centre to be evacuated for about three hours.

The 21-year-old is accused of placing a device inside the centre on Wednesday.

He appeared before Swansea magistrates on Friday charged with placing an article which is likely to cause alarm and was remanded in custody.

Det Ch Insp Esyr Jones said police took malicious and hoax incidents seriously.

He added: "They divert police resources and cause disruption and alarm to the public."
