China earthquake displaces 'tens of thousands'

A shallow 6.0 earthquake in China's southern Yunnan province has displaced tens of thousands of people, said Chinese authorities.

One person was killed and more than 300 people were injured in the quake, which took place late on Tuesday night, according to state news agency Xinhua.

Injured residents rested in makeshift tents and beds by the road in Yongping, one of the towns affected by the quake.

The epicentre was near Pu'er city which is famous for its tea plantations. It follows an earthquake in south-west China in August where more than 300 people were killed.

The quake happened late on Tuesday night. Scores of homes were damaged.

Authorities are now trying to help more than 100,000 people who have been forced from their homes, said Xinhua.

Paramilitary police have begun setting up tents and relief aid in nearby fields.
