Balbriggan beach in Dublin closed after sewage leak

A beach in north County Dublin has been closed to swimmers because of raw sewage.

It was discharged into the Irish Sea for up to 26 hours beginning on Monday 27 August.

In a statement, Fingal County Council said power interruptions caused by the bad weather led to problems.

Pumps at the council's pumping stations had failed and this led to the sewage being discharged.

The council is awaiting the results of water quality samples before the beach reopens for swimming.
