Police officer hospitalised after serious assault
An off duty officer was attacked as he returned from a night out with his wife in Limerick on Sunday.
The man, in his 20s, was confronted by a number of people at 3.30BST, while returning to a family member's house.
One of the attackers struck the officer, causing him to fall and hit his head on the ground, fracturing his skull.
He is being treated in the Mid Western Regional Hospital, and police are appealing for witnesses.
It is the second serious assault in Limerick in less than a week, with a man in his 40s currently in critical condition following a similar incident.
