Hurt Irish hillwalker taken to hospital

A man aged in his 50s has been airlifted to hospital by the Irish coastguard helicopter after he fell while hillwalking in County Kerry.

He was descending from Carrauntoohil in the MacGillycuddy's Reeks when he fell at Heavenly Gates just after 17:00 BST.

Members of the Kerry Mountain Rescue Team responded, and the man, who has sustained leg injuries, was winched on board a coastguard helicopter.

He is being treated in Kerry General Hospital in Tralee.

At 1,038 metres Carrauntoohil is the highest peak in Ireland.
