A search for a missing man at the back of a murdered former garda's house in County Cavan has ended, Irish police have confirmed.

A patio was being dug up at the home of former detective John Kerins near Bailieborough, County Cavan.

He had been questioned about the disappearance of a neighbour, Gerard Daly, nearly two years ago.

Two men arrested over Mr Kerin's murder have been released without charge.

Mr Kerins, 49, was shot dead at his home in 2012 as he was watching television in the sitting room of his home at Cornaveigh near Bailieborough.

Mr Kerins had worked in the fraud squad in Dublin and was medically discharged from the force in 2009.

Mr Daly, a father of three, was last seen by his partner on the evening of June 26, 2011.

His disappearance is being treated as murder. Irish police began an excavation of the patio on Monday but nothing was found.

During the search, members of Mr Daly's family visited the scene.

A garda spokesperson said that investigations were ongoing.
