A murder investigation has been launched after a man died following a shooting in Dublin on Thursday night.

James Talbot, 46, was shot a number of times at his home in Abbeywood Court in Lucan around 10:30 GMT.

The father of four was taken to Connolly Hospital, Blanchardstown, where he was later pronounced dead.

The victim's wife and four teenage children were in the house when a gang of men forced the door open.

Detectives have said it was a "well-organised and planned attack".

They said the gang left the scene in a beige coloured Toyota Aventis, registration number 05 C 15878.

They have sealed off the scene in the Earlsfort Estate in Lucan where the vehicle was found on fire shortly after the shooting.

Detectives are now carrying out house to house inquiries and are speaking with neighbours who reported the sound of shots.
