Jonny Cooper: Dublin GAA football player injured in stabbing

A senior member of Dublin's Gaelic Games Association (GAA) football team has been stabbed during an attack near Dublin city centre.

Jonny Cooper sustained injuries to his head and neck in the attack which took place in Upper Dorset Street at about 05:30 local time on Saturday.

The 24-year-old footballer plays at county level for Dublin and at club level for Na Fianna in Glasnevin.

He was treated at the Mater Hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

A Garda (police) spokeswoman said officers in Mountjoy Garda station were investigating the attack.

Writing on his Twitter account on Saturday evening, the player said he was "absolutely humbled" by the message he had received from supporters who heard about the attack.

His club also posted a message on its official Twitter account.

It said: "Jonny home since last evening and in good spirits, both he and Na Fianna would like to thank everyone for the many messages of goodwill."
