Dublin explosives find 'highly significant'

Two men have been arrested after explosives were discovered by police investigating dissident republican activity in Dublin.

Armed officers forced a taxi to stop on Spring Garden Street in Ballybough at about 18:00 on Friday.

They discovered more than 5kg of TNT plastic explosives as well as detonators.

Gardaí (Irish police) have said the discovery is highly significant.

They believe the material was destined for use in Northern Ireland.

The two men are being held under Ireland's Offences against the State Act and can be questioned for up to three days.

People were moved from their homes as army bomb disposal experts worked for over three hours to make the area safe.

Residents were allowed back into their homes at about 23:00.
