STIs rise amongst older people in Guernsey

The number of people aged over 50 suffering from sexually transmitted infections has risen, according to health authorities in Guernsey.

The Health and Social Services Department said changing lifestyles has led to an increasing number of older people who are single or dating.

Figures show three out of eight newly-diagnosed HIV infections in the island occur in those aged 50 or older.

This compares with none at all three or four years ago.

A department spokesperson said some people in the age range may not think that safer sex applies to them, as pregnancy is not an issue.
