Guernsey States will not meet its 2010 target of 50% for both domestic and commercial recycling.

The Public Services Department said 48.8% of domestic waste was recycled in the first half of 2010, but the figure was expected to drop to 44.4%.

Commercial waste recycling stood at 39% at the end of 2009.

The department said it would not hit the target and has requested the States reduce it to 44%. The motion is due to go before the States in December.

The department revealed it spent £1.25m on recycling and associated services during 2009.
