Guernsey's West Show organisers said they are relieved to have attracted a good turn-out after a poor start.

The annual festival, held at the L'Eree aerodrome in the parish of St Peter, looked like being a washout after heavy rain and thunderstorms earlier.

However, bright sunshine followed and by 15:30 BST Stan Bichard estimated the attendance at 3,000-4,000.

"Up until lunchtime it was not very pleasant," he said, "but everything's drying out nicely."

The West United Agricultural and Horticultural Society event centres around the traditional livestock and produce displays, with a children's funfair and show jumping.

The Jersey met office predicted sunny periods in the Bailiwick of Guernsey for the second and final day of the show on Thursday, with patchy, light rain in the afternoon.
