Guernsey charities have been urged to apply for funds raised by this year's Channel Islands Christmas Lottery.

The proceeds of the lottery are split between the charity associations of Guernsey and Jersey based on the proportion of tickets sold.

The draw is due to take place on Thursday, 20 December.

Malcolm Woodhams, association treasurer, said: "The sums raised for charity have increased considerably over the past few years."

More than £2.5m has been given to charities in Guernsey since 1986, when money from the lottery was first given to local causes.

Last year 42 charities in Guernsey received grants totalling £213,898.

Charities must be registered with the association to apply and applications must be made for a specific project within the Bailiwick.

The closing date is the end of January.
