Guernsey Footes Lane Stadium has been closed to athletes while the running track is resurfaced.

It is the first time the track has been re-laid since it was built for the 2003 Island Games on the island.

A spokesman for the Culture and Leisure Department said the work was expected to take more than a month and cost £130,000.

He said the work was timed to coincide with the ground's quietest period.

This is due to athletes competing at the Island Games in Bermuda and it being the off-season for football and rugby.

Sue Trebert, junior coach for the Guernsey Island Amateur Athletics Club, said she was pleased funds were being invested in the site.

She said the athletics juniors would be training at locations such as L'Ancresse Common during the work.
